    Maths Intervention

Communiskills offers personalised, one to one numeracy support/maths tutoring for children who are struggling to learn maths or want to improve their skills.

We build their understanding and confidence in a fun, supportive environment, helping Maths make sense.

We use an evidenced based multisensory approach to numeracy intervention (Maths Australia) which is aligned to the Australian Curriculum.

  • A young girl with braided hair and light skin reading a Dr. Seuss book titled "Hop on Pop" at a wooden table in a bright room with a large window.

    Reading Intervention

We assess the child’s ability to read words and understanding the words to make sense of what they are reading. We then provide therapy focusing on the skills needing to be practised. This may include: Sound awareness, phonics, recognising sight words, decoding skills (sounding out words and blending sounds), and reading comprehension skills. Intervention is based on the science of reading.

    Writing Intervention

Working with children on their writing skills first involves an assessment to determine what skills the child is finding difficult and then targeting these areas in therapy using a supportive approach. This may include: - grammar - how words are put together in sentences, forming sentences to express ideas, spelling rules and story writing

  • Child holding a drawing of a red apple with green leaf and a picture of a donut with chocolate frosting and sprinkles, with red letter A and green letter D.

    Phonics / Spelling

Word reading requires understanding the letter-sound rules and decoding. Spelling words requires understanding the letter-sound rules to spell words (encoding). Struggling readers and writers often have difficulty with these skills.

At Communiskills we use systematic and explicit phonics instruction which follows the science of reading, working with the student at their point of need.

  • MSL - Multisensory Structured Language Instruction

We have experienced teachers who are trained in MSL, an evidenced based approach for teaching reading, writing and spelling to students of all ages.

This approach helps build success and is:

    • multisensory,

    • explicit and direct (one concept at a time),

    • sequential (moving from simple to more complex),

    • cumulative (builds on prior learning),

    • cognitive (learning is based on how we understand language)

    • individualised (at the students pace)
